About life in Brazil

Yes, I am happy and feel good. I was welcomed like never before. I had free time and was having a great time, traveling back and forth between Rio de Janeiro and Vancouver. My wife is also happy and my son David is playing for Botafogo in Rio, what more can I ask for?

As to whether I miss the daily life of the club

Not at all! Not at all!

On what kind of changes have occurred in the new job

My job is interesting, and now I need to observe more. I watch the Brazilian league live and learn about the European leagues through collaborators located across Europe. We follow about 60 players in these months and it's a different kind of job that I enjoy.

Regarding the relationship with the international football players during the international matches,

is very good. We have a very serious, professional group of seniors who are respected by the entire team. The atmosphere here is completely different from that in the club: everyone plays cards and chats during the training camp, with mobile phones on the back burner and a strong sense of discipline. The veterans lead the team, and the younger players not only adapted without issue, but did so with enthusiasm. There's a really nice atmosphere here. I don’t want to sound romantic or nostalgic, but the feeling reminds me of my days in Roma, when we traveled by train because Liedholm didn’t like flying. I think it's a matter of shared culture and everyone speaking the same language, which is very important to unite the team. In Spanish, there is a strong sense of ‘companionship’ here. I haven't experienced this feeling in a long time and it was so nice, it was a pleasant surprise.

I will be very nervous when I see Botafogo play, like all parents. It's a special experience, but it's nice to be here with him and reunite our family.

About my coaching experience over the years

This has been a great journey and a beautiful journey. I often think back to this wonderful journey I have followed football. I have been lucky enough to be exposed to many different cultures. Nowadays I am discovering Brazil which I have never been to and it is a very interesting country. People always ask me to pick the best 11-man squad I've ever coached, which is an impossible task. Someone sent me a list of players by position the other day, and there were just too many, too many talented names, too many quality players. Likewise, it’s hard to choose the cities I’ve lived in.

About coaching the Brazilian national team

is very good, we have high-level veterans and excellent young players, surrounded by an incredible enthusiasm. People want us to win the World Cup and we will try to do it. Brazil hasn't won a World Cup in too long and they rightfully want a sixth title.

On whether I felt pressure

I felt more passion than pressure. The love of football here is unbelievable. We are currently playing friendly matches and there is a feeling that the team is improving and that will be the case until the World Cup.

People’s impression of Brazilian fans is that they are used to watching beautiful football, and this is the first criterion by which they judge the team. In fact, this is not the case. What Brazilians want to see most is for the national team to win the World Cup. Obviously if you play well you have a better chance of getting to the end, but in 1994 and 2002 they won the title with a solid defense despite having great forwards, and I'm sure the next World Cup will be the same.
