Kompany: My decision to join Manchester City from Hamburg was right. Jackson could partner with anyone

At 0:30 am on September 14, in the third round of the 2025-26 Bundesliga, Bayern will play against Hamburg at home. Before the game, Bayern coach Kompany attended the press conference and talked about some of the current situation of the team.

Regarding expectations for this game

- At home, we have always been popular, but every game has its own risks. Every team that comes here is for points. As for the past, it has nothing to do with me and Porzin (Hamburg coach). They upgraded from the German Second Division, so they are full of confidence.

This always brings danger, they will enter the game with confidence because they won a lot of victories last season. It was great for both cities, and there was also some kind of north-south confrontation between the two very beautiful cities. This is a game with a long history and we are looking forward to it.

About your other connections with Hamburg

- I haven't played for too many clubs in my career. I've always been in touch with them, and on a competitive level, my days in Hamburg weren't that easy, and so did my personal life, but I still have some good memories. My mother passed away during that time, my sister got cancer, but I made a lot of friends, the club has been supporting me, and the connection between us has always existed.

Now, my focus is on Bayern, and I am trying to find the same feeling here. That’s what makes this job special, being able to connect with a club. I worked here for my first season and it worked very well.

About your last match with Hamburg

- I still remember that match and after the match I decided to leave. They recalled me from the Olympics and I was on the bench and I was angry about it (laughs). That was unacceptable in principle to me, and after that game, I decided to do something. Everything in the burger was great and that time left me with great memories. My dad tried to convince me to stay, but I wanted to leave and the decision to join Manchester City was not wrong.

Will you let go of the burger?

- We play at home and we have our own advantages. We fight our opponents with confidence, no matter what the outcome of the game, I don’t want the team to retreat, we have to give our all. We played for Bayern, and every game was tough and there were no easy tasks.

About Jackson

- The first phase of training was very important to him until the next international match day, he did not play a full preseason at Chelsea. He is naturally athletic and can quickly get back to 100% and we have to make sure he can find the rhythm. He is a strong player and has also scored goals in the Premier League. I believe we will be able to get the most out of his strengths soon.
