Ser Radio: Barcelona and other teams were asked to cancel matches against Israeli teams
Ser Radio news, Catalan political parties asked Barcelona and other clubs to cancel the game against the Israeli team. Catalan party leader Jessica Albiah sent a letter to the presidents of Barcelona, Badalona Youth Team and Manesa Basketball Team, calling on them not to participate in the upcoming game against the Israeli team. Jessica believes that participating in these competitions "is endorsing genocide and turning a blind eye to atrocities." According to the schedule, these three Catalan teams will play against the Israeli team in the next week. Jessica wrote in a letter to Barcelona Chairman Laporta: "As the club with the largest number of members, you should take a brave step." She also mentioned that Barcelona has shown firm values in history, even during the Franco period. However, she also criticized Barcelona for already playing a match against Hapoel Tel Aviv on September 30, when the Catalan Parliament was observing a minute's silence for Israel's massacre of Palestine. Now she is urging Barca not to repeat the same behavior and not attend next Tuesday's match against Maccabi Tel Aviv. The situation of the Manesa basketball team is of particular concern because their games will be held in Catalonia. In a letter to Manesa Basketball President Josep Maria Elms, Jessica noted that some fan groups have mobilized to try to stop the Oct. 15 game, saying allowing the game to go ahead would mean "whitewashing genocide." Similarly, Jessica also mentioned fan pressure in a letter to Badalona Youth Team president Juan Antonio Morales in an attempt to persuade the Catalan team to cancel its FIBA Champions League match against Hapoel Holon. Jessica believes that the sports community has shown a "sense of responsibility and commitment" in dealing with the Russia-Ukraine issue, and calls for the same action to be taken on the Palestinian-Israeli issue to ensure that Israel does not participate in any international basketball competitions or the Tour de España. Jessica emphasized, “Sports cannot be used to whitewash genocide. It is impossible for sports competitions to remain normal while the bombing, blockade, and systematic human rights violations in Gaza continue.”
